Review of The Wicker Man (2006) by Eliot%20 K — 09 Jan 2019
The apogee of the "so bad its good" movies The Wicker Man needs to be seen to be believed. This is a hilarious performance by the reliable Nicholas Cage and some of the things he does will make the audiences laugh instead of shudder.
Despite retaining significant chunks of Shaffer's dialogue to go along with the basic story structure, LaBute has transformed the eerie, disturbing psychological thriller into an unintentional comedy.
At times, The Wicker Man is hilariously bad. When this isn't the result of LaBute's ill-advised "enhancements" to the original tale, it's caused by absurd new lines or Nicolas Cage's bumbling attempts to step into Edward Woodward's shoes.
The atmosphere- which is so important for such films is decent but nowhere as daring as the 1973 version.
