Review of The Wedding Singer (1998) by Shawn T — 17 Jun 2012
It doesn't get five stars from me based on a film-making standpoint, but from an entertainment standpoint. This, Say Anything, and Love Actually are probably my favorite romantic comedies ever. Adam Sandler is at his peak here for likeability and humor, and Drew Barrymore is his perfect match, the one beauty in all of his films in which it actually seems plausible for them to actually end up with an Adam Sandler character (as well as Paz Vega in Spanglish).
The film pays tribute to pop culture of the 1980's and highlights the fun times and great music of that era with tons of references. And it features some of the most appropriate and hilarious cameos of any Adam Sandler film (particularly one big rock star of the early '80s that appears towards the end of the film, won't give that away).
This is Adam Sandler's greatest comedic film and romantic film in one shot.
