Review of The Wedding Singer (1998) by Allan C — 16 Aug 2015
This is a film that I've somewhat lost perspective on since it was a movie I wanted on an early date with my wife. And the "I Wanna Grow Old With You" just kills me, which incidentally was the song my wife and I played for our first dance at our wedding.
Regardless of my sentimentality towards this film, it's also wildly nostalgic from all the 1980s charm that drips from the film. Although a lot of the hair, clothes and music covers are over-the-top and done for laughs, anyone who grew up in the 80s and hold a soft spot for the trappings of that decade will find this film irresistible.
Adam Sandler plays the title wedding singer who is left at the alter and heartbroken until he falls for the utterly charming Drew Barrymore, who unfortunately is engaged to a Miami Vice wannabe. What makes this film one of Sandler's better films is that he doesn't go quite as absurdist and Sandler is more subdued and only occasionally acting at the top of his lungs.
Sandler has shown a lot of talent in films like "Spanglish" and "Punch Drunk Love" though I suppose I can't blame him for continuing to make more juvenile film that make way more money.
However, I'd love to see him in more films like these. Another reason this film is probably better than most Sandler films is that Carrie Fisher and Judd Apatow did uncredited work on the script.
