Review of The Way We Were (1973) by Antonius M — 04 Nov 2007
Maybe it was because I was lying sick on my bed that I enjoyed this movie so much. That I will have to test later in life. For now, I have to say that this is a very good film. It has this unusual flavour that you somehow know that things will not last although you can feel how much they care about each other.
That's a daring step to take in a romantic movie since we, the viewers, always want romance to conquer. We all know how unromantic real life can be and we want Hollywoord to compensate for that. I also liked the subtile treatment of a failing love affair.
No Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf here or other mentally deranged love affairs. This story tells the hardest thing to accept in love: that you really love each other but cannot make it work. I also liked the characterisation of the rich, fun loving decadent kids versus the sober, hard working Katie who is always fighting for a cause, always standing up for principles but never really having fun.
Great movie.
