Review of The Way We Were (1973) by Graeme H — 16 Aug 2013
Yes, some may not enjoy The Streisand Shtick or The Robert Redford 70's Sexy Boy images -- but one would be hard-pressed to not fall for this romantic movie. Perhaps one of the Top 10 ultimate bittersweet cinematic love stories. Two people who are so wrong for each other, but so desperate to be right. Barbra Streisand gives an unforgettable performance and Robert Redford delivers one of the most memorable performances of his career in Sidney Pollack's iconic film.
The only true criticism of this beautifully rendered story is the over simplification of the politics surrounding McCarthyism. And, the ultimate reason that the two characters decide to end there relationship is also over-simplified due to Hollywood choices around story-line editing. In the end, however, it does not matter. These two movie actors are so strong in their roles that even the hardest heart will melt as Marvin Hamlisch's song swells for the end credits.
A must see. Great old-school movie romance with a twist. Unforgettable cinematic magic.
