Review of The Way of the Gun (2000) by Peter B — 12 May 2008
A classy thriller with a few bursts of action. The script crackles in a near tarantino way with quotable dialogue and flips the bird to convention and cliches with some neat little character reveals along the way.
Ryan Philippe shows he can actually act, Del Toro is smoooth and James Caan pops up in a good role too. It dips a little bit in that you feel like there is gunna be more action but thats more because of your expectations of the genre rather than a fault of the film itself.
The fact that the bursts of action are so good and shot so well is what leaves you wanting more. Its a slow burner and just has a classy vibe running throughout it that lets you know you in good hands.
The soundtrack is good and adds brilyantly to the tension. At times it feels like a modern day western especially in the big final showdown. It's pritty pritty gud.
