Review of The Way of the Gun (2000) by Ronnie P — 12 Oct 2008
Decidely average.
Made at a time when it was cool to have a simple plot padded out with details from the stories of the people that the plot deals with.
It worked in Reservoir Dogs, it worked in Pulp Fiction, it even worked in Jackie Brown. See a pattern here?
Except ol' QT is actually quite good at what he does and his plots aren't actually that simple. What they are, is true. Maybe not 100% real but there is a realism there.
Here though, even if you can believe the plot, the characters don't lend it any credibilty. They seem to hover between trying to be honest/real and then reverting to cool moments.
Also, not much seems to happen and you get a sense that it's all leading to one great big showdown that never appears. There are a couple of quite "cute" set pieces and a splattering of cool lines but that doesn't make the film cool.
What it does do, is make you wish that they had more direction because it could've so much better if it had a little more direction.
This isn't helped by another feeling that the actors here are so much better than the script.
