Review of The Warriors (1979) by Steff A — 18 Jan 2010
It's about time to kickstart my Flixster account after not using it for all the summer. So what better way to do so than a cult classic? I wanted to watch this movie for quite some but purchasing other movies kept postponing it.
So when I stumbled upon it on the last place I thought I would (the romance section of my videoclub) I simply couldn't resist. About the movie now. The movie has the now classic story that's been used about a thousand times.
Some members of a gang (The Warriors in our case) have been left all alone behind enemy lines and have to get back home by any means possible. Where the movie delivers though is the way it depicts the violent of crime throught the naive minds and personalities of young gang members.
The mentality of these peolple is something like a crossover of Mean Streets and Clockwork Orange meets The Goonies. While trying to get home and save themselves, the priorities change and the movie really lets the characters develop.
The casting is good and whille it is not the best acting you 'll ever see the movie has a Sergio Leone feeling, in the respect that despite not being amazing actors the guys and galls chosen as gang members are the right for the job.
Their faces are excellent for this movie (and I mean down to the last of the extras) in the way Leone used gypsies in his movies to play Mexicans. The direction is good, making the viewer feel the pressure around the gang and using funky 70s music to accompany the journey.
If there is one thing I have to say against this movie is that I wanted more of it. More street fighting and more character developing mostly in characters from the other gangs. To sum up a really good movie that gives an in depth view into the minds of angry and desperate young people but leave's you begging for more.
