Review of The War of the Worlds (1953) by Joe C — 09 Oct 2010
Far from the artistic achievement on the level of the book or the radioplay, but still a quintessential B-movie from the fifties (the competence of direction, scientific accuracy, acting quality and overall budget is only mildy better than Plan 9 From Outer Space).
Watching it again, I never realised how heavy-handed the religious overtones dominated this version. You can almost hear the sound of H.G. Wells turning in his grave under lines such as "humanity was saved by the littlest things, which God, in His wisdom, had put upon this Earth.
" Would be a 1-star review if not for the iconic 50's sci-fi sound design and unintentionally hilarious dialogue. "THE MARTIANS ARE COMING!!".
