Review of The War of the Roses (1989) by David C — 06 Apr 2009
Much better than the last combo of Douglas, Turner, and DeVito. Romancing the Stone was utter crap. This movie had some great dark moments in it and I attribute that to DeVitos direction. At the same time, like Matilda or Death to Smoochy, DeVitos films seem to take things from dark comedy to slightly too uncomfortable for real enjoyment.
For instance - the scene where Douglas tries to rape Turner and she in turn tries to bite off his Johnson. Suddenly, it's not fun.
