Review of The War of the Roses (1989) by Nate W — 01 Jul 2011
In "The War of the Roses", Danny DeVito's caustically funny look at a deteriorating marriage and even more vicious divorce, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner pull out all the stops to try and get the other one to give up the house, with catastrophically self-destructive results.
The film moves along at a crisp pace that never loses its sense of humour, eventually escalating to an outrageous finale that's a bit too over-the-top. Douglas basically reiterates his career-driven Gordon Gekko character, but effectively so, making a wicked comedic tandem with Kathleen Turner's capricious housewife.
The screenplay by Michael Leeson flirts with the theme of becoming imprisoned by materialism, occasionally evoked by some interesting photographic decisions.
