Review of The War of the Robots (1978) by Unca C — 22 Apr 2006
Unca Chaoz is back!
Let's see, "War of the Robots".
This is an Italian sci-fi flick.
...
Pretty much say's it all, doesn't it?
The movie starts with aliens that look like the Children of the Damned breaking into a futuristic facility on Earth and kidnapping two scientists.
Anyhoo, a group of soldiers dressed in the hippest space fashions from Milan decide to rescue the duo from the Aryan aliens. During the rescue they come across a race of blind people who they free from tyranny. As it turns out the aliens have lost the ability to procreate and need the scientists to start artificial life.
There are some surprise turns so I'll give them credit for that. But, other than that and some 'Star Wars' rip-off moments; there isn't much to see.
The interiors and even some of the spacecraft look like rejects from SPACE:1999. The 'special' effects are 1960's quality, at best. While I assume this thing makes more sense in the original Italian - it's quite atrocious in English. The dubbing is terrible as well. The acting - well let's just say an attempt was at least made to act in this movie, but the inferior quality of the sets probably drained the enthusiasm by the end.
On the other hand, It's probably about halfway thru that the cheese factor takes hold. Call it "Stockholm syndrome" or something but at some point the entire silliness of it all just overwhelms even the boredom of the movie. Probably where the soldiers use 'rayguns' that don't actually shoot rays. There's just a 'piu' sound and the aliens fall. Hilarious.
The most positive thing is that most of the women wear skintight leotards and tunics. Well, at least we have that going for us.
Oh and did I mention that the one of the scientists has to also a stop a nuclear reactor from going Ka-bloeey on Earth?
Fun rating: 6 (drips more cheese than a pizza pie) - fans of "good, bad films" and "Euro-Schlock" will probably get a kick out of it. Serious fans of SF and cinema will only collapse into convulsions.
Interest rating: 5 (best as a rental only - and only if you happened come across it).
