Review of The Walk (2015) by Rey V — 07 Nov 2015
My palms were sweating, my heart racing, my mouth dry. I had to look away. Frequently. And I don't think this was just because of the 3D. Zemeckis brings the audience onto the wire for nearly a third of the movie and it's an amazing and wondrous thing.
Levitt is charming, and his French accented English is good enough to make me believe, probably because he is as wiry and driven as Petit. Having seen the documentary Man on Wire, there were no surprises.
And yet, I felt a sense of suspense until the very end. How did they do that? PS - I think the decision to have the protagonist narrate the story was effective, allowing us to understand the central mystery of the story -- why he would do this crazy thing.
The decision to plunk him onto the torch of the Statue of Liberty was contrived, clearly an excuse to add more oomph to the 3D effects we were paying extra for. At least there weren't fireflies, the usual cliche.
