Review of The Wailing (2016) by Nathan C — 28 Aug 2018
This Korean horror film about a town experiencing a string of gruesome murders is one of the best horror films of the 21st century. Unfortunately it hasn't had the mainstream attention as it should.
PROS:
-A brilliantly immersive, slow burning, and unsettling story that is and suspenseful and relentless in every way. It all leads to a terrifying conclusion.
-Strong performances from the cast really elevate the film.
-A lot of twists and turns keep you hooked in the story.
-Very minimal jump scares; it truly relies on the atmosphere and story to scare you, and that is so refreshing.
-Small town in the mountain setting adds an isolated setting into the story.
-Surprisingly more drama elements in the film, and I did not mind at all.
CONS:
-The run time might just run a little long for some; it didn't really bother me.
-The ambiguity and the twist and turns will lose some people the first time; not really a con, but it is not for the common moviegoer.
This film shows how much better Korean horror films are than most people realize. Every horror film buff much watch this film.
