At first, the excessive style seems to be an attempt to force an overtly weird cult status on the film . . . until you realize it's a calculated effort to distinguish between the main character's perception of his surroundings and their dark reality.
Reynolds' performance confirms he's far better than the roles in mediocre comedies he's usually given.
