Review of The Voices (2014) by Bob%20 D — 13 Jul 2018
Starts off promisingly, setting up for interesting developments then fades into predictability, with stereotypical characterizations and a plot centering on the delusions of the main character as a source of pathos, of which there is veritably nil, as similarly there was little development of each character or any substantive attempt at sub-plot.
Without any complex narrative development, which it desperately required to lift it to watchable material status it was boring, despite the best efforts of all concerned to make it into a stylish charmer.
It claims itself as a 'black comedy', which is usually the emergency critical genre tag band aid like applied to this type of failure to hit the benchmark film that confusingly doesn't convincingly quite qualify as either a thriller or a comedy.
The ending was ludicrous, puerile and pointless, full of logical holes that really defined the lack of skill in its producers and it left me frustrated, disappointed and not entertained utilizing a 'And then I woke up' conclusion, poorly conceived like a half asleep young child's bed time story.
This film tried to raise itself into one of those 'triumphs of style over substance' types of feature, but couldn't manage to attain even that goal, and so reeked of being nothing other than just an easy vehicle made to further the industry presence of every actor in it.
A film which needed to be more thoughtfully developed into something that firmly decided exactly into which genre it was going to commit, in order to work concertedly toward that goal, because by trying to fulfill the roles of both, it divided itself and failed doubly to either achieve or to impress any measure of both.
I joined this site expressly because this specific film irritated me so much!
