Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Charles C — 04 Oct 2014
One of the best movies on gender issues in the 1970's that I've seen. Considering this was the inception of 2nd wave feminism, the issues this film raises are prescient even today. I first saw this film years ago, and it had little impact on me personally.
But after seeing it again in a women's studies class recently, the issues it raises are profound. Especially since there is in the film a divide between the ability of the boys and girls to have any communication at all, and the boys are left to merely speculate as to the motives and injustices that fomented the main tragedy of the film.
Something that seems so needless. And simply because the conservatism of the postwar generation looms so heavily over all the young people in this film, I tend to wonder at the emotional landscape amongst adolescents now.
..even given our so called progress, has anything really changed at all. Given the realities of teenage suicide, especially in light of gender based online bullying, I tend to wonder.
