Review of The Virgin Suicides (2000) by Deadly Night S — 08 Jun 2009
I think I can now add Sophia Coppola to my list of good directors. Her movies have a certain beauty to them that is all her own, and it makes for a great viewing experience. One thing about them, however, is that they require a second watch before they can be fully appreciated.
The story of the Lisbon girls and their tragic decision is enthralling. We get to know them through the eyes of some neighbor boys who loved them, and therefore our own interpretation of why they chose to end their lives is just as fractured as the boys'.
What we are left with is an ethereal dream about a group of girls who were never fully understood. Sophia has a great ear for music, and always uses it to her advantage in films. She also has a great eye for shots, and there are some beautiful ones here.
The acting is fantastic, and the film itself will hold you until the bitter end. Wonderfully hypnotic movie. I'd recommend it to any girl, and any guy who's ever really loved.
