Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Bert R — 27 Oct 2008
Pretty typical fare if you're used to Bergman's style. Minimalistic use of fancy effects and editing, no soundtrack whatsoever, small cast, ambiguous storyline. It isn't his best (by any and all measures), but still worth seeing for the cultural value.
As per usual, I have no idea what to make of the ending (The lord works in mysterious ways? Praise be to Odin?) but the thematic concepts tackled are certainly new, even nearly 50 years since its release.
The conflict between the pagan and christian belief structures taking place in 13th century Sweden, highlighted in the phenomenally brutal scene featuring Max Von Sydow and the herdsman, really do get at you.
Great stuff, if you're into this sort of thing.
