Review of The Virgin Spring (1960) by Christophe M — 23 Apr 2011
This revenge drama feels very familiar, but it is very well done here. Bergman utilizes lighting and shadows to great effect, and gives a vivid depiction of rural medieval Sweden. The violence is handled very well--it is neither exploitative nor does the film shy away from depicting violence and showing the humanity of its victims and its perpetrators.
