Review of The Virgin Queen (1955) by Sarah L — 25 Jul 2011
In case you are mislead by the title, The Virgin Queen is referring to Elizabeth I, queen regnant of England and Ireland in the 16th century. She was complex, legendary and popular: perfect persona for movie makers. That explains why so many movies are based on her. This one, is centered on the relationship between the queen and Sir Walter Raleigh.
In terms of production values, 'Elizabeth' (staring Cate Blanchett in 1998) did a better job. Both the costumes and sets are more lavish, more stunning and appropriate. However "The Virgin Queen" scores points for being more focused. Bette Davis' Elizabeth is an indecisive, proud and fiery queen. Her last scene with Joan Collins was unexpectedly brave. Too bad, its ending is weak.
