For me, the film set up way too many wonderful possibilities and didn't follow up with any of them. Talking with some of my friends, I've come to the conclusion that the director was so caught up in making social commentaries that he lost sight that he was making a film.
Sound Design/Musical Score: 5.
The music felt like it was stolen from an African safari soundtrack (do they exist) and plopped right down onto this film. AKA, the music did NOT work for me.
Cinematography/Editing: 6.
Pretty standard, I guess. There were some horrible effects shots with Denzel moving at light speed. It felt totally unmotivated to me. Read what you want into it. Looks like a director playing with himself on screen, to me.
Actor Performance/Connection to Audience: 9.
What can I say? The performances were amazing. Denzel was awesome. Clive and Jodie were both amazing (although I wanted Jodie's character to have a little more play).
Directing/Achievement of Goal: 8.
I think Spike did was he wanted to do. I just don't think what he wanted to do was that amazing.
Entertainment: 7.
Good all the way through until nearing the end. We've predicted everything by that point. So sad.
