Review of The Vanishing (1993) by Hamish C — 11 Aug 2009
Some poor choices were made in this remake of the fantastic Spoorloos. With a much higher gore and thrill content than the original and a complete 180 on the ending it is all to its detriment. Jeff Bridges is eminently watchable and Keifer Sutherland plays it great but the menace and true tension is gone. Less was definitely more.
The back of the dvd says "Essentially the same film". This could not be further from the truth and I am surprised it is made by the same director. The changes seem purely motivated by marketing and consumption concerns.
This is not a bad film. If you hadn't seen the original you will likely enjoy it. But seriously.. Rent the original.
