Review of The Vampire Lovers (1970) by Francisco G — 17 Apr 2013
Having never seen this before, I wasn't sure what to expect with The Vampire Lovers. I knew that it was a risque movie about lesbian vampires, but I didn't know much else beyond that. Safe to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the movie.
Sure it does contain an awful lot of lesbian vampire moments, but it's set up quite well. It was based on the story Carmilla and is set well within the period it takes place in. The performances are good, including Ingrid Pitt's, who you almost feel sorry for at times, despite her being a vampire.
Madeline Smith is gorgeous, and it's always nice to Peter Cushing pop up in a movie, even if he is only in the beginning and the end of it. It was also nice to see a young and hunky Jon Finch in the movie.
I liked how the film was set up in the beginning and how it concluded. It did drag a bit in a few spots, and had Omen qualities in aspects of the storyline, but it was satisfying and very well-made. It will soon be brought to the Scream Factory label via Shout! Factory, so I'm looking forward to it being discovered by genre fans.
