Review of The Upside of Anger (2005) by Acacia & — 17 Feb 2009
Not sure why I chose to watch this movie, but I did, so there you go. The first 30 minutes or so are painful; I almost stopped the movie and fled in terror a few times. But once you get used to its somewhat weird, girlish nature, it actually becomes quite entertaining.
Joan Allen, a woman who gets instant praise for having a wonderful last name, gives one of the strangest yet most effective performances I've ever seen. The whole movie is just bizarre and funny and random. There's a scene where a character's head explodes, out of nowhere, and drenches the confused characters around him in blood. It makes sense contextually, but it's a bizarre scene nonetheless given the otherwise tame nature of the film.
It's also relatively plotless, which I guess is why it takes so long to get into it. The beginning goes nowhere, and stays there for a good half hour, which isn't the best way to begin a film, but whatever.
Anyway, good movie, weird though. Weird!
