Review of The Upside of Anger (2005) by Tony R — 27 Dec 2005
Joan Allen's performance in The Upside of Anger is unquestionably the best of any actor or actress of 2005. Even though her character can be a monstruous bitch at times, you still empathize with her because of Allen's ability to perfectly encapture her character.
It also features wonderful performances from Evan Rachel Wood, Alicia Witt, and Keri Russell as Allen's daughters and a surprisingly good performance from Kevin Costner as a perpetually drunk former baseball player.
Besides Allen's performance, what also sticks out is the hilarious script from Mike Binder, who also directed the film. It captures the perfect balance between comedy and drama and makes The Upside of Anger a subtle masterpiece.
