Review of The Unbelievable Truth (1990) by Private U — 02 Sep 2007
Killer movie. Before "Indie" was a film category, guys like Hal Hartley were making brilliant films like this, independent of the studio machine. Hartley's characters are constantly telling the truth to each other, in a matter of fact way, dry, neither confessional nor syrupy.
While a larger truth (of the world, say) appears missing. The outcome is strange but uncanny, emotional - everybody alone yet interrelated. Kind of like the Truth. Adrienne Shelly = XO.
