Review of The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) by Jon W — 28 Jan 2008
Very long, very erotic, and absolutely gorgeous. Artistically, this is one of most incredibly well done films I have ever seen. I have a feeling I didn't entirely "get" this film but I felt like it could have been shortened considering the central theme.
I got a sense that Kaufman wanted to bring out every nuance of his characters and their relationships with each other. And while he most certainly did accomplish this, I felt that it was almost a little too much for a film.
The need to make everything implicit and suggested contributed to the overall length, which as I have said, was a little bit too much. Aside from the epic length (3 hours), certainly, The Unbearable Lightness of Being was very very well done.
