Review of The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988) by Jon G — 29 Mar 2008
Philip Kaufman directed only two films throughout the entire 1980's. One was the modern American masterpiece "The Right Stuff," and the other was this touching, beautiful, provocative adaptation of the Milan Kundera book about lovers in 1960s Prague.
The three lead performances (Daniel Day-Lewis, Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche) each have a field day in their respective roles and Kaufman the storyteller shows great patience and understanding in adapting the seemingly unadaptable source work.
Unbearable? Try unforgettable.
