Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Charissa L — 13 Oct 2007
Sad love story, six main characters - the couple, their rivals, her mother, his aunt.
A very simple and ordinary story quite extraordinarily told. No spoken dialogue, it's 100% song (but it's certainly not a 'musical'). Music by Michel Legrand.
If sad love stories are your thing this is an absolute must.
Regarded as a national treasure in France, the Ministry of Culture paid for its restoration in the 1990s.
Whatever became of Ellen Farner ?
