Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Geraldine C — 23 Jun 2008
I had nothing but high hopes for this movie: I love opera, I love musicals, and I love colorful vibrant movies. Sadly, this movie failed to live up to its promise. The whole thing was recitative, and even the most formal of opera has some catchy arias: none of the melodies were catchy, which sadly made the entire musical score an obstacle rather than the delight I expected.
Moreover, the characters were tired and old, and the plot was... less than amazing. I wish it had been better.
