Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Luanne M — 02 Oct 2008
Quite good if you like musicals performed by actors rather than singers. The visual design is lovely, and so is the young Deneuve. The story line really isn't the raison d'etre of this movie, so Demy keeps it simple, an archetypical tale of a very young couple, each partner with a not-so-secret admirer on the side.
When the couple is separated, each one marries the admirer, and then, several years later, their paths cross in one last, bittersweet encounter. Such stuff could be played as a tragedy, but this film is far too slender for that, so it ends with a c'est la vie attitude that will not appeal to all viewers.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a film that won't move you to tears, this is it.
