Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Brendan S — 05 Jan 2009
Beautiful and heartbreaking. The whole film seems to play with the very concept of the movie musical from the fact that every line is sung to the goregeous aesthetic. If this were the typical musical, everything would end perfectly.
But, when the lovers see eachother again in the snow for a brief moment before going on with their respective lives, it is one of the most wrenching moments ever put on film.
