Review of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) by Aimee A — 08 May 2010
The most heart wrenching musical of all time. Beneath the candied colors of Jacques Demy's stunning set designs & vivid cinematography, doesn't lie an overly sugar coated story. It is about young lovers who have to part due to war and how the trouble of distance and heart tears them apart.
In the end, their story is bittersweet and I'm sure many people will find it relatable. The mastery of it is that all the dialogue is in song and it works in telling the story effectively and beautifully, no matter how melancholy it is.
