Review of The Tree of Life (2011) by Holly Y — 24 Feb 2015
This is Terrence Malick - poetic, metaphorical, absurd yet stunning. I still haven't grasped the true meaning of the film and that's why I love it, it's so fascinating. It is a story that goes beyond the surfaces of passive entertainment and plunges into the realm of philosophy.
With wisdom, imagination and wonderful description, Malick teaches us about nature, relationships, childhood and human kind. Jessica Chastain is as powerful as ever and Pitt continues to master any role thrown at him.
This is not a film to sit back and enjoy, this is an experience of self-understanding and purification. Once that can be appreciated, the true masterpiece of the film is revealed.
