Review of The Tingler (1959) by Michael J — 29 Dec 2011
Somehow, 'The Tingler' manages to take one of the most horrible ideas in movie history, and turn it into a fun (be it exceedingly campy) and entertaining film.
The premise is simple: there is a bug that lives inside every human on earth. When a person is frightened, the bug grows in size and crushes your spine. The only way to weaken the bug is to scream, which causes it to shrink back down to normal size. No, I did not make that up. Despite this tomfoolery, it is strangely interesting.
Price delivers his usual great performance, and the direction is solid. The highlight of the film to me was an early attempt to capture an LSD trip on film. Quite strange and a little unnerving. All in all, this is a laughable but fun old school piece of horror.
