Review of The Three Musketeers (1948) by Tyler P — 18 Sep 2007
A surprisingly faithful adaptation of Dumas's novel. To be certain, it still takes a lot of liberties with the source material--and is a bit lighter in tone throughout--but it still manages to hit the broad strokes of the book, even in places where I thought for certain it would deviate.
Gene Kelly is a wonderful d'Artagnan, and his athleticism serves him extremely well here. Lana Turner is also quite excellent as Milady de Winter, one of the greatest femmes fatale in literary history.
Last but not least, Vincent Price is just a great villain. This is thus far the best film version of the classic story I've seen.
