Review of The Three Musketeers (1948) by Tom H — 20 Jul 2009
What a cast! Not-quite-accurate retelling of the Dumas pere classic. Interesting to see Gene Kelly's athleticism sans the dance. Lana Turner is perfectly cast as the evil Milady de Winter. June Allyson's pretty-girl-next-door charm is winning as a re-written Constance (instead of being the wife of M.
Bonacieux, she is now his daughter; in 1948, it was frowned upon to have an affair with a married woman). Vincent Price makes a deliciously Machiavellian Richelieu. Much lighter (though much less slapstick-y) than its 1973 counterpart.
Always a pleasure to see Keenan Wynn hamming it up!
