Review of The Third Man (1949) by M D — 12 May 2009
Holly Martins investigates the mysterious third man present after his friend Harry Lime is hit by a car and killed in Vienna. Martins battles with local authorities and delves into the nefarious background of a friend he thought he knew.
This easy to follow classic benefits greatly from the nighttime in Vienna photography adorned with wet brick streets and bold and dynamic shadows. Beneath the streets lies the greatest chase scene through the complex and twisting sewers; some real and some studio made.
An entertaining but not over the top thriller mystery that benefits as a whole from heavily used canted angles and diversity of shots accompanied by the zither score. And of course the ending is a rather insulting slap to the face.
