Review of The Third Man (1949) by Tim M — 10 Aug 2009

It is rare that I watch a film which is considered one of the best and has lots of hype surrounding it and it actually meets those expectations. It is rarer still to find one that meets them and surpasses even what one expected. The Third Man is such a movie. It is hard to find fault with the film. An ingenius plot carried out smoothly, succinctly, and in a timely manner while completely capturing the audience's interest and at the same time entertaining is something we rarely experience from films. To often they add in extra details or try to throw some side plot in, but The Third Man keeps to the main story from start to finish with mystery, intrigue, suspense, and twists along the way.

The acting is played out wonderfully and dialogue is kept to what needs to be said. The photography and editing matches the style and feel of the film and moves the story along visually. The use of lighting is well used which is a must in a black & white film. The music is that of a zither and is used to, not as much set the mood, but keep the noir feel and a lighter feel. The zither music is not dark or sinister, but often a rather light, quick-paced melody played even at 'dark' moments. It moves the story along and keeps us intrigued with the goings on without having to imply danger or sinister events. The music is one of the most interesting aspects of the film since it does not seem to match that a man has died, yet it fits the film perfectly.

The Third Man is an execellent example of good film making and rightfully deserves its place as one of the greatest films made. Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles are well known actors, but a young Bernard Lee is also in it (which for James Bond fans they know him as the first and longest appearing actor in the role of Bond's boss M). I often say when a film is worth watching but I couldn't stress enough that this is definitely a film worth watching if you enjoy movies and appreciate well-made film.
