Review of The Thing from Another World (1951) by Julian T — 08 Dec 2011
Definitely a true classic sci-fi film. Unfortunately it is completely and totally overshadowed by its John Carpenter directed remake (which might be a top 5 horror movie of all time), but this is about as good a sci-fi film as the 50's has to offer.
At the backbone of the movie is a great script, one of the few things that it holds above its protege. Slick back and forth dialogue that really pops the characters off the screen. The creature is suspect, but that problem is minimized by keeping it mostly off camera and in the shadows. The direction is nothing special, but is effective.
A few gripes, as the scientist character is seriously overacted and obnoxious, and the romance angle is unneeded. Also, its a pretty poorly adapted version of the original story, 'Who Goes There?', which the remake adheres to much more closely.
Mostly though, this is a really and surprisingly good movie, and should be mentioned among the great classic horror/sci-fi films of all time.
