Review of The Thing (2011) by Hasib H — 12 Jun 2012
As a big fan of John Carpenters re-make of The Thing, I was highly anticipating this prequel/remake and when a chance came up to go see it with my brother who is also a fan, I took it. Admittedly I was a little apprehensive about seeing it.. would it live up to expectations?
I'm pleased to say that I really enjoyed the movie... The previous one is still the definitive version, despite being a bit dated now, however this version is very well done, combining new elements, with just the right amount from the previous movie to make it feel very familiar too...
The effects are updated, and much more graphic than before and we get to see more "Thing" from earlier in the film... The cast of 'unknown to me' actors do an excellent job of capturing the tension and paranoia... and it is interesting that one of the lead roles is now female.
Being a prequel, the story is familiar because of events that are suggested in the previous movie... like finding The Thing in the ice etc. and although there were one or two little things that bothered me a tiny amount, it was generally a pretty good plot.
If you enjoyed the previous movie, then you should definitely go and see this. I very much enjoyed it.
