Matthijs van Heijningen directs this prequel to John Carpenter's 1982 classic but does not succeed. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Kate Lloyd, a paleontologist, who is summoned to examine an interesting specimen at a Norwegian Antarctic base.

They have discovered an alien spaceship with a mysterious creature frozen nearby in ice. But when they bring it back to study it, they discover that this creature may not be dead. The film at times clearly pays homage to the Carpenter film but it can never build tension in the same way that the original could.

Winstead and Joel Edgerton (who plays an American pilot named Braxton Carter) are nowhere near as engaging as Kurt Russell was. While the original was a taught horror thriller, this film is just a lame action film with souped up special effects.

In the end, go see the Carpenter film from 1982 and skip this one.
