Review of The Thing (1982) by Lawrence B — 23 Oct 2012

This movie was given to me because my friend didn't want it no more. I was like okay. I knew nothing about this movie and the prequel hadn't even been thought of at the time so I completely clueless to what this movie might be.

So I sat down and watched it. I had a feeling that it would be good since it was directed by John Carpenter and starred Kurt Russell, that's a pretty good mash-up if you ask me. Before I get to the main part, the plot.

So we have a twelve man team in Antarctica. I really don't know why but I didn't question it, we have this helicopter chasing this dog through the snow and this guy is sitting here blasting away at it.

This guy was a terrible shot, but so is everyone is horror movies unless your like Alice or Selene, am I right? But they kill the men and take the dog into their care. Wrong move, suckers! I'm thinking, well obviously there's something going on with this 'dog'.

They put it with the other dogs after it's been out all day while Kurt Russell's character and some of the other men go to the camp where the man shooting at the dog came from. The Norwegian camp.

Something definitely happened there, as when they got there, the camp lies in ruins. They later find out that the Norwegians discovered an alien ship buried in the ice for over 100,000 years. Crazy! They get back to the camp and everyone soon realizes that the dog is a shape-shifting alien that can turn into a perfect replica of anything it wants to.

They soon have to fight for their lives as a creature that can manipulate anything it touches turns into one of them and kills them off. So after that brief plot (Yeah, I know. Not very brief). This movie was very tense, gory when it had to be, kept my interest, and had very good special effects for it's time period.

But it wasn't perfect. 4/5.
