I went into this movie expecting a lot, and I kept telling myself I like it, but I really didn't. As it opened I thought, "okay, he's showing how the war affected the naked village people of generic pacific native village.

He's showing how at peace the soldiers can be with them, an how the war disrupts that serenity as they take the deserting soldiers back onto the boat. Wait, these are deserting soldiers, they really need to do that or everyone will leave when it gets rough.

These village people don't actually seem to terribly upset by this. They punished him by taking him out of the unit that always got the crappy dangerous jobs? He should like this, he just wanted lazily wait this war out anyway, this way he still gets paid! What the hell is this crap?!" And there you have the beginning of The Thin Red Line.

I won't bother describing any more, nothing happens after that anyway.
