Review of The Thin Man (1934) by Michael P — 23 Jul 2007
The Thin Man is the first and most popular story in what ended up being one of the most successful serialized dramas in Hollywood history.
Nick, the protagonist, is unwillingly set upon by his wealthy and witty wife Nora to do some detective work on a case in which a former client of his is the chief suspect to a murder.
The pace of the film is quick, and the film is only about 90 minutes long in total. However, because of the quickness of the pace, the film loses any sense of suspense and character development, and is forced to stand on the two legs of plot and the repartée between Nick and Nora (which is, admittedly, quite entertaining.) The net-net of this is that while the film is fun to watch, it really is not as involving as it could have been if it were paced slightly differently or had slightly more nuance to the plot development.
