Review of The Thin Man (1934) by Jens T — 16 Oct 2012
W.S. Van Dyke's The Thin Man is the first collaboration between William Powell and Myrna Loy who made a total of 14 films together. And the Thin Man became so popular that another five sequels were made. In this series we follow the private detective, Nick Charles (William Powell) usually accompanied by his wife named Nora (Myrna Loy) and their dog, a Wire Fox Terrier named Asta (Skippy). In the first movie, the retired detective Nick is making a comeback when an old friend has disappeared and is probably been murdered. And together with his wife and dog, Nick decides to take the job, he's practicably forced.
The Thin Man is a funny film to watch, and both Powell and Loy have the perfect chemistry, the perfect screwball couple in the history, with all their wittiness, with all their insults and their extra cocktails, one to many I may add. They are fast with their lines and seems really to have been married, but it's just pretty good acting. Definitely one of the greatest screen duos in the history of cinema and a funny screwball comedy. Thumbs up.
