Review of The Thief of Bagdad (1924) by Jack W — 16 May 2010
One of the best silent films I have ever seen, just an amazing tour de force. Unlike many silent films that fail to captivate today, this film keeps you entertained throughout. Three things stand out. First, the art direction and production design are supremely done.
No expense was spared as the sets, costumes and makeup are elaborate, extensive and beautiful. Next, the amount of and quality of effects is incredible. The effects done here are better than most for the next fifty years.
Finally the performance by Douglas Fairbanks. What an incredibly gifted and talented actor. He was an amazing athlete and he was in great shape. The physicality of the role was intense and he mastered it easily.
With all the crap remakes being done I am bewildered that this hasn't been green lit yet. Amazing film!
