Review of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) by Bryan M — 01 Jun 2007
This is the kind of movie that everyone should watch. Released in Germany in the 1930's, banned, and then not shown again until the mid 50's (with 20 minutes of editing to bring the picture down to just over 100 minutes), the Criterion collection version of the DVD sports the original unedited director's cut of the movie.
It has sensational story lines, and actually a lot of shots that remind me of things that are still in movies now. It's a very powerful movie, with a strong underlying message and just a little bit on the haunting side.
I never lost faith in it the whole way through and would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys film noir and doesn't mind black and white.
