Review of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) by Joakim L — 11 Nov 2007
Creepy and spooky. They never make movies like this anymore.
This is a study of crime and criminal behavior. But also psychologi. It's ahead of it's time.
Lang was forced to leave Germany and the film was banned by the Nazi Party.
Highly recommended. Like many films by Lang it was shot with French actors for a release in France. The DVD from Criterion has that version as an extra feature. But see the German first and later view the others. This is a follow up to Dr Mabuse der spieler where Mabuses empire is established and finaly colapses.
A document of a disturbing time in Germany and a milestone in cinema history.
